Mamluks. al-Zahir Sayf al-Din Jaqmaq, AH 842-857 / AD 1438-1453. Dirham (Silver, 14 mm, 1.65 g, 5 h), Anatolian type. Within a circle, ‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); around, traces of the names of the four Rashidun Caliphs in Arabic. Rev. Within a central circle, a subdivided square filled with unidentified symbols, probably abjad letters; in the margin, ‘al-malik al-ghālib al-ʿādil … al-ẓāhir Jaqmaq’ (‘The overcoming and just king, … al-Zahir Jaqmaq’ in Arabic). Album 1007. Zeno 304708. An extremely rare type. Minor a die break on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
